Statewide public TV network awarded Emmy for live and recorded coverage of third annual international equestrian competition
Baltimore, Md. – The Sport & Entertainment Corporation of Maryland (The Sport Corp) celebrates the announcement that Maryland Public Television (MPT) has won an Emmy® Award in the category of Live Sporting Event/Game (Single Program) for their coverage of the 2023 MARS Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill presented by Brown Advisory. Last year’s coverage of the event, which saw Austin O’Connor become the first Irish-born rider to win the prestigious 5 Star (CCI5*-L) competition level in 58 years, had more than 150,000 viewers tune in, between on-air and via live stream on MPT-HD, the MPT live stream and the free PBS App.
As the official regional broadcast and live stream provider of the 2023 MARS Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill presented by Brown Advisory, MPT, in partnership with The Sport Corp, offered viewers nearly 14 hours of live and recorded coverage throughout event week in DC, MD and contiguous states, including a mix of pre-and-post-event coverage and airing of the awards ceremony at the conclusion of the four-day event on various platforms.
Building on the success of last year, MPT returns for the fourth year as the official regional broadcast and live stream provider of the annual Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill from October 17-20, 2024, at the Fair Hill Special Event Zone in Cecil County, Maryland. MPT will again carry live coverage of Dressage, Cross-Country and Show Jumping along with pre-and-post-competition reporting including award ceremony coverage featuring sports broadcaster Jim Hunter anchoring the MPT Sports Desk live from Fair Hill.
“Winning an Emmy® for the coverage of the 2023 MARS Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill is a testament to the collective hard work, dedication, and support of the MPT team, the event broadcast production company Carr-Hughes Productions, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Cecil County and The Sport Corp,” said Jeff Newman, President & CEO of the Maryland 5 Star Event Committee. “This collaboration to showcase this world-class event has brought tremendous visibility to the sport of Eventing and Maryland as a premier destination for equestrian competition. We are excited to continue this partnership and bring another year of exceptional coverage to our regional audience both in and out of the state of Maryland.”
“That MPT’s broadcast of the 2023 Maryland 5 Star earned a Capital Emmy® Award in the Live Sporting Event category speaks to the shared vision that The Sport Corp and our statewide public TV network have to bring the Olympic sport of Eventing to fans across our region,” explains Troy Mosley, MPT’s Managing Director of Content. “We’re honored to be the Maryland 5 Star’s regional broadcast and live stream partner and look forward to our continued collaboration as we prepare to offer viewers outstanding coverage of October’s world-class competition.”
In late June, The National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS-NCCB) presented Maryland Public Television (MPT) with 15 Emmys during its 66th Capital Emmy® Awards ceremony. Among the 15 awards presented to MPT was an Emmy in the Live Sporting Event/Game (Single Program) category for the October 2023 broadcast on MPT of the Maryland 5 Star. During its more than 50-year history, MPT has earned 211 Capital Emmys out of 496 total nominations.
